Magiel was born in 1758 in Loon op Zand and his baptism took place there on December 31st, 1758.1  Magiel's father was Dirk van der Leij and his mother was Dingena Hommel.  His paternal grandparents were Wouter Goverdszn van der Leij and Dorothea Petersdr de Rooij; his maternal grandparents were Michiel Jacobszn Hommel and Jacomijna Willemsdr de Geus. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Wouter, Peeter, Jacomijna, Dingena, Doora and Jacoba.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 73 on January 11th, 1831 in Capelle (Noord Brabant).2
