Maarten was born in March 1679 and his baptism took place on March 12th, 1679 in Rijnsburg.1  Maarten's father was Theophilus Copius and his mother was Elisabeth van Hoff.  His paternal grandparents were Theophilus Copius and Elisabeth Ackerman. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Karel, Theophilus, Philip Willem, Philip Willem, Adam, Margriet, Elisabeth Josijn and Catharina.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
