Karel was born in February 1676 and his baptism took place on February 2nd, 1676 in Rijnsburg.1   His godmother was Catharijn Helena van Hoff. Karel's father was Theophilus Copius and his mother was Elisabeth van Hoff.  His paternal grandparents were Theophilus Copius and Elisabeth Ackerman. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Theophilus, Maarten, Philip Willem, Philip Willem, Adam, Margriet, Elisabeth Josijn and Catharina.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
