Jan was born in 1807.1  Jan's father was Willem Aalten van den Broek and his mother was Hendrikje Jansdr Ruitenberg.  His paternal grandparents were Aalt Brandszn van den Broek and Bartje Jansdr N.N.; his maternal grandparents were Jan Jurriaanszn Ruitenberg and Geurtje Stoffels. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Aalt, Derk, Hendrik, Brand, Willem, Bartje and Geurtje.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 68 on August 1st, 1875 in Ermelo.1
