Derk was born on January 16th, 1814 in Ermelo.1  Derk's father was Willem Aalten van den Broek and his mother was Hendrikje Jansdr Ruitenberg.  His paternal grandparents were Aalt Brandszn van den Broek and Bartje Jansdr N.N.; his maternal grandparents were Jan Jurriaanszn Ruitenberg and Geurtje Stoffels. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Jan, Aalt, Hendrik, Brand, Willem, Bartje and Geurtje.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 65 on December 20th, 1879 in Ermelo.2
