Susannah was born in 1883 in East Halton.1  Susannah's father was George Maplethorpe and her mother was Ann (Annie) Hancock. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Charles, John, Cyril, Clara, Alice and Lucy.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
