Cyril was born in 1899 in Ulceby.1   Cyril's father was George Maplethorpe and his mother was Ann (Annie) Hancock. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Charles, John, Susannah, Clara, Alice and Lucy.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
