John was born in 1887 in Saxby Wold.1   John's father was George Maplethorpe and his mother was Ann (Annie) Hancock. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Charles, Cyril, Susannah, Clara, Alice and Lucy.  He was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
