Alice was born in 1889 in Saxby Wold.1   Alice's father was George Maplethorpe and her mother was Ann (Annie) Hancock. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Charles, John, Cyril, Susannah, Clara and Lucy.  She was the sixth oldest of the eight children.

The relationship between them, e.g. married, divorced etc., is unknown.  They had a daughter named Joy.
