William was born in 1880 in Kirton Lindset.1   William's father was George Maplethorpe and his mother was Ann (Annie) Hancock. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Charles, John, Cyril, Susannah, Clara, Alice and Lucy.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
