Clara was born in 1885 in Saxby Wold.1   Clara's father was George Maplethorpe and her mother was Ann (Annie) Hancock. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Charles, John, Cyril, Susannah, Alice and Lucy.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
