William was born in 1843 in Workington, Cumberland and his christening took place on June 11th, 1843 in St Michael, Workington, Cumberland.1 2   William's father was William Quirk and his mother was Elizabeth Pendergrass.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Quirk and Ann Allan; his maternal grandparents were John Pendergrass and Elizabeth Murphy. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Edward, John, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 3 on March 26th, 1846 in Workington, Cumberland.2
