John was born in 1848 in Workington, Cumberland and his christening took place on December 17th, 1848 in St Michael, Workington, Cumberland.1 2   John's father was William Quirk and his mother was Elizabeth Pendergrass.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Quirk and Ann Allan; his maternal grandparents were John Pendergrass and Elizabeth Murphy. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Edward, William, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the five children.
