Edward was born on June 24th, 1839 in Roper street, Whitehaven, Cumberland and his christening took place on December 17th, 1848 in St Michael, Workington, Cumberland.1 2   Edward's father was William Quirk and his mother was Elizabeth Pendergrass.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Quirk and Ann Allan; his maternal grandparents were John Pendergrass and Elizabeth Murphy. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 70 in December 1909 in Birkenhead, Cheshire.3
