Joseph was born in 1703 in Newton Toney, Wiltshire and his christening took place there on April 29th, 1703.1 2   Joseph's father was Benjamin Piper and his mother was Barbara Dennett.  His maternal grandparents were Johannis Dennett and Sivob Burratt. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin, Robert, Martha and Mary.  He was the youngest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Sarah.
