James was born in 1745 in Oakley, Hampshire and his christening took place there on October 6th, 1745.1 2   James' father was William Oliver and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, John, Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Hannah, Dinah and Esther.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
