Alexander was born in 1821 in Penzance, Cornwall.1   Alexander's father was Isaac Newton and his mother was Elizabeth Gendall.  His paternal grandparents were William Newton and Frances Drew. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Isaac, Elizabeth, Fanny and Julia.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 69 in December 1890 in Marylebone, Middlesex.2
