William was born in 1885 in Levens, Westmoreland and his christening took place there on June 28th, 1885.1 2   William's father was John Harris Latham and his mother was Eliza Ransome.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Mary, Margaret, Annie and Lucy.  He was the youngest of the six children.
