Lucy was born in 1882 in Levens, Westmoreland and her christening took place there on February 5th, 1882.1 2   Lucy's father was John Harris Latham and her mother was Eliza Ransome.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Mary, Margaret and Annie.  She was the second youngest of the six children.
