Mary was born in 1871 in Levens, Westmoreland and her christening took place there on March 26th, 1871.1 2   Mary's father was John Harris Latham and her mother was Eliza Ransome.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Margaret, Annie and Lucy.  She was the oldest of the six children.
