John was born in 1876 in Levens, Westmoreland and his christening took place there on May 7th, 1876.1   John's father was John Harris Latham and his mother was Eliza Ransome.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Mary, Margaret, Annie and Lucy.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 4 in December 1880.
