William was born in 1851 in Priest Lane, Shenfield, Essex.1   William's father was William Kemp and his mother was Frances Knight.  His paternal grandparents were John Kemp and Elizabeth Bentall. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Frederick, France, Hannah, Ellen, Rhoda and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
