Mary was born in 1862 in Shenfield, Essex.1   Mary's father was William Kemp and her mother was Frances Knight.  Her paternal grandparents were John Kemp and Elizabeth Bentall. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Frederick, William, France, Hannah, Ellen and Rhoda.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
