Ellen was born in 1850 in Priest Lane, Shenfield, Essex.1   Ellen's father was William Kemp and her mother was Frances Knight.  Her paternal grandparents were John Kemp and Elizabeth Bentall. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Frederick, William, France, Hannah, Rhoda and Mary.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
