Benjamin was born on December 16th, 1869 in Mile End, Middlesex and his christening took place on January 5th, 1870 in St Philip the Apostle, Stepney.1 2  Benjamin's father was James Raphael Horncastle and his mother was Maria Thompson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas James Horncastle and Elizabeth Ritchie. He had three brothers named James, Thomas and Alfred.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named John, James, Elizabeth, Emma and Mary.  He died at the age of 69 in 1938 in Stepney, Middlesex.3
