Stephen was born in 1780 in South Stoneham, Hampshire.1   Stephen's father was James Gannaway and his mother was Mary Hawks.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Gannaway and Mary. He had six brothers named James, Thomas, Thomas, George, Henry and Elijah.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
