George was born in 1786 in South Stoneham, Hampshire and his christening took place there on August 6th, 1786.1 2   George's father was James Gannaway and his mother was Mary Hawks.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Gannaway and Mary. He had six brothers named James, Thomas, Stephen, Thomas, Henry and Elijah.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
