William was born in 1794 in Harnham, Salisbury, Wiltshire.1   William's father was William Dear and his mother was Jane Parrick.  His paternal grandparents were John Dear and Hannah Ryan. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Samuel, Henry, John, Mary and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
