John was born on January 4th, 1807 in Harnham, Salisbury, Wiltshire.1   John's father was William Dear and his mother was Jane Parrick.  His paternal grandparents were John Dear and Hannah Ryan. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Samuel, Henry, Mary and Jane.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
