James was born on August 21st, 1799 in Harnham, Salisbury, Wiltshire.1   James' father was William Dear and his mother was Jane Parrick.  His paternal grandparents were John Dear and Hannah Ryan. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Samuel, Henry, John, Mary and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
