William was born in 1795 in Eling, Hampshire and his christening took place there on May 24th, 1795.1 2   William's father was Robert Bromfield and his mother was Ann Plomley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named George, Henry, Frederick, Peter, Elizabeth, Mary, Ann and Ann.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
