Joseph James Avis

Joseph was born in December 1842 in Newington, Surrey.¹ Joseph's father was Nathanial Avis and his mother was Elizabeth Whitlock. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Avis and Mary Chambers; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Whitlock and Christiana Durham. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, John, George, George, James, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Female. He died at the age of 27 in September 1870 in Saint Saviour, Southwark, Surrey.²
