George Avis

George was born in September 1854 in Newington, Surrey.¹ George's father was Nathanial Avis and his mother was Elizabeth Whitlock. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Avis and Mary Chambers; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Whitlock and Christiana Durham. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, William, John, George, James, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the third youngest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Female.
