Ellen was born in 1869 in Horsforth Yorkshire.1   Ellen's father was James Jackson and her mother was Margaret Agnes Jackson.  Her paternal grandparents were David Jackson and Mary Ann Rhodes; her maternal grandparents are Isaac Nichols and Janet Miller. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Samuel, Fred, Harry, Thomas, Mary Ann, Janet, Eva, Alice and Ada.  She is the second oldest of the ten children.
