Robert was born in 1838 in Keyingham East Yorkshire and his baptism took place there on February 25th, 1838.1   Robert's father is William Garton and his mother is Hannah (Garton).  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Garton and Phebe Wilson. He has three brothers and four sisters, named Charles, John, William, Mary Ann, Rebecca, Rose and George.  He is the second oldest of the eight children.
