John was born in 1843 in Keyingham East Yorkshire and his baptism took place there on September 2nd, 1843.1   John's father is William Garton and his mother is Hannah (Garton).  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Garton and Phebe Wilson. He has three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Charles, William, Mary Ann, Rebecca, Rose and George.  He is the fifth oldest of the eight children.
