Charles was born in 1842 in Keyingham East Yorkshire.1   Charles' father is William Garton and his mother is Hannah (Garton).  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Garton and Phebe Wilson. He has three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, John, William, Mary Ann, Rebecca, Rose and George.  He is the fourth oldest of the eight children.
