William was born in 1813 in Welton East Yorkshire and his baptism took place there on August 29th, 1813.1   William's father was Thomas Garton and his mother was Phebe Wilson.  His paternal grandparents are Robert Garton and Rebecca Fox. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Ebenezer, Ebenezer, Rebecca, Mary and Mary.
