Jessie's father was James Thomson and her mother was Jean Duncan.  Her paternal grandparents were Philip Thomson and Dorothea Hart. She had seven brothers and six sisters, named James, Alexander, James, Thomas, William, Philip, David, Dora, Jane, Isabella, Janet, Margaret and Helen.  She was the fifth oldest of the fourteen children.
