Helen's father was James Thomson and her mother was Jean Duncan.  Her paternal grandparents were Philip Thomson and Dorothea Hart. She had seven brothers and six sisters, named James, Alexander, James, Thomas, William, Philip, David, Dora, Jane, Jessie, Isabella, Janet and Margaret.  She was the second youngest of the fourteen children.
