Janet was born on February 14th, 1810 in Linlithgow.1  Janet's father was James Thomson and her mother was Jean Duncan.  Her paternal grandparents were Philip Thomson and Dorothea Hart. She had seven brothers and six sisters, named James, Alexander, James, Thomas, William, Philip, David, Dora, Jane, Jessie, Isabella, Margaret and Helen.  She was the fourth youngest of the fourteen children.
