Janet was born on December 15th, 1791 in Bathgate and her baptism took place there on December 27th, 1791.1   Janet's father was James Thomson and her mother was Mary Bruce.  Her maternal grandparents were William Bruce and Janet Newlands. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, William, George, James, Archibald, Margaret, Mary, Catherine and Janet.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
