Susan's father was Jonathan Robertson and her mother was Helen Tait. Her paternal grandparents were James Robertson and Ann McMurran. She had six brothers and five sisters, named James, George, John, Hugh, Robert, Edmund, Catherine, Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth and Mary. She was the third youngest of the twelve children. She died at the age of 1 in 1891 in Gorbals.
