Jane's father was George Robertson and her mother was Martha Carlton McGloughlane. Her paternal grandparents were William Robertson and Elspeth Thomson. She had two brothers and eight sisters, named William, John, Margaret, Martha, Mary, Agnes, Euphemia, Charlotte, Catherine and Minnie. She was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.
