James' father was Thomas John Robertson and his mother was Catherine Cameron. His paternal grandparents were William Robertson and Elspeth Thomson. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Margaret, Mary, Christina and Ann. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Thomas, William, Elizabeth and Euphemia.
