Martha's father was William Munachen and her mother was Catherine Robertson. Her maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. She had six brothers and seven sisters, named Peter, Peter, George, James, William, John, Agnes, Euphemia, Annie, Minnie, Martha, Minnie and Janet. She was the oldest of the fourteen children. She had two half-brothers named William and Peter. She died at the age of 13 in 1882 in Ayr.
