Agnes' father was John McEwan and her mother was Elspeth Savage. Her maternal grandparents were Hugh Savage and Margaret Dickson. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Hugh, John, David, Jane, Mary, Maggie and Elspeth. She was the second youngest of the nine children.
