William's father was John McDonald and his mother was Euphemia Robertson. His paternal grandparents were Charles McDonald and Janet McNidder Robertson; his maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. He had three sisters named Janet, Martha and Euphemia. He was the second youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Kerr. He died at the age of 53 in 1922 in Darvel.
