Martha's father was John McDonald and her mother was Euphemia Robertson. Her paternal grandparents were Charles McDonald and Janet McNidder Robertson; her maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Janet and Euphemia. She was the second oldest of the four children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Kerr. She died at the age of 1 in 1868 in Galston.
