John's father was Alexander Kerr and his mother was Euphemia Robertson. His maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. He had a sister named Kerr. He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named William, Janet, Martha and Euphemia. He died at the age of 75 in 1935 in Darvel.
